We had another great meeting tonight. Thank you to our presenter, Dr. Robert “Bob” Powell, Associate Professor and Director of Clemson University Institute for Parks, who gave us a history lesson on the Georgia Island in Anartica and took us back 20 years when he and two friends took an adventurous trip to the Georgia Islands, Antarctica with the intention of circumnavigating the island with kayaks. As he said, they planned the trip from the comforts of their couch at home. Little did they know what they were in for! He had great photos and kept us quite entertained on their exploits. The photos were great! Imagine taking 5 cameras of varying quality and the only one to come through the 50-day trip was the least expensive point and shoot! This island even though it is so isolated has seen the effects of man — birds with hooks stuck in their beaks and seals with fishing line around their necks to name two. As a result of this excursion, Bob went back to University to earn his PhD from Yale and has been back 8 or 9 times since then and has circumnavigated the whole island with a kayak with another researcher for the purpose of counting birds in areas where only kayaks could reach.
